Nageshwar Reddy Duvvur

Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad, stands as a paragon of medical innovation, compassion, and relentless pursuit of excellence in patient care. Dr. Reddy is a globally renowned Gastroenterologist, who revolutionized the field of therapeutic endoscopy, transforming thousands of lives across the globe and made India a hub for world-class GI Endoscopy services.

Born on 18th March 1956, Dr. Reddy did his MBBS from Kurnool Medical College thereafter MD from Madras Medical College and specialization in Gastroenterology from the PGIMER, Chandigarh. He started as a professor of Gastroenterology at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad and then at the Guntur Medical College before setting up the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in 1994. Soon the institute became the first in India to be recognized by the World Endoscopy Organization as a Centre of Excellence. His groundbreaking inventions such as the Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) procedure and the NAGI Stent have saved countless lives by offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

Beyond clinical excellence, Dr. Reddy’s commitment to affordable healthcare is unparalleled. As the founder of the Asian Healthcare Foundation, he has bridged rural-urban healthcare divides, deploying India’s first mobile endoscopy units and screening programs that bring life-saving diagnostics to underserved communities. His GI Endoscopy Technician Program has trained thousands, ensuring skilled care across the nation. His contributions extend to healthcare technology, where he has collaborated with IITs, IISc, and international research institutions to develop several diagnostic and therapeutic tools to treat gastrointestinal diseases.

An educator and mentor, Dr. Reddy has shaped the next generation of gastroenterologists, while his prolific research—over 1,050 publications and 18 textbooks—enriches global medical knowledge.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Reddy spearheaded critical research, treatment protocols, and community initiatives, ensuring affordable COVID-19 care, free treatment for frontline workers, and vaccine strategy optimization. His scientific leadership and commitment to public health played a crucial role in shaping India's pandemic response. His leadership at AIG Hospitals produced critical research and protocols that guided national treatment strategies.

Internationally acclaimed, Dr. Reddy has been honored with the Rudolf Schindler Award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy—the first Indian to receive this distinction—and the prestigious AAAS Fellowship, a testament to his scientific eminence. He has been awarded the Distinguished Educator Award by the American Gastroenterology Association, Master of the World Endoscopy Organization (MWGO), among several other eminent global accolades. In terms of national awards, Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy received the Dr. BC Roy award in 1995, Padma Shri in 2002, Padma Bhushan in 2016 and Padma Vibhushan in 2025.
